Express Yourself

Express Yourself is a guided writing cohort for MFR Therapists which offers a powerful supported self care practice, while deepening capacity and skill with attunement, deep listening, and potent dialoguing.

The Experience

  • SMALL GROUPS


    Sessions are 75 minutes on Zoom, once a week, for 3 months with the same intimate small group cohort (five members or less for each cohort). This allows us to establish trust and grow together as a closed circle.

  • GUIDED SESSIONS

    We start with a short meditation to bring mind and body together. A prompt is offered, which can be interpreted (and even ignored) in any way the writer chooses. We write for 15-20 minutes without concern for structure or grammar or editing. 

  • SUPPORTIVE SHARING

    Those who are willing then read their piece to the group and receive feedback around which parts created impact for the listeners. Feedback is offered through concrete guidelines which keep the writer safe. Both the giving and receiving of feedback is structured in ways that are full of learning opportunities and supportive insight.

  • DEEP DISCOVERY

    Express Yourself is a container for MFR therapists to deepen your understanding of your self, your gifts, your clients, and your practice through writing and sharing. This offering is intentionally created around two core tenants of Tara’s mentorship:

    The very foundation of mastery is self-knowledge. 

    Our artistry arises from our authenticity.

  • DEVOTED SELF-CARE

    While you will experience the deep work of discovery, this group is also a supported way to devote yourself to a fruitful self care practice. As a therapist, you listen to the stories of others all day. This is an opportunity for you to welcome the transformative experience of being listened to deeply, with care and connection, and without judgement or advice.

  • BONUS SESSIONS

    Once monthly optional larger group experience with all cohorts together. This will allow you the option to hear shares and receive feedback from a larger group of therapists who are all doing the same work without disrupting the cohesion of the circle of your cohort.

  • It's nearly impossible to put into words, but I will close my eyes and try.

    We go through life gritting our teeth, just making it through, yelling to be heard, holding everything in, lashing out in anger, not speaking. In Express Yourself, it's like the Wailin' Jennys song "One Voice" that's really about all the voices. In the act of listening to one (at a time), and in the act of responding to one (at a time), in community we are all heard. The 'rules' stop the chaos of the extrovert dominating, or the fixers jumping in to save and therefore dominate, of the quieter of us being drowned out. If you've ever been to a 12 step meeting, you'll know what I mean by this: There is no cross talk, or dominance. The rules are important.

    Really the question is: What's it like to be heard and seen? What other question is there, really? How can we do this for others if someone doesn't do this for us? I could spell out the benefits in the treatment room and in personal life, but I'd rather ask you to answer the question: How does it feel to be seen and heard? This is Express Yourself.

  • We use words in written expression to tap into our internal landscapes. We use words and verbal expression to allow witnesses to listen and offer interpretive feedback.

    The words that flow freely from my spirit during Tara's Express Yourself (EY) course astounded and challenged me. The words that I had the opportunity to listen to have dared me to push my own emotional and thought patterns.

As an alum of a writing salon which held space for a mixture of professions and intentions, I can absolutely attest to the next-level power of doing this with fellow MFR therapists. We start with some implicit understanding around our respect for emotion and the many ways it can be expressed. We already know how we hold both trauma and treasure in our subconscious mind. We share the dance between facilitating healing for others while staying true to our own needs around healing.

We don’t need to explain ourselves to each other, and that level of coherence is very potent, and rare, in group experience. Our focus is not on form, grammar, or editing; it is on dropping into our bodies and staying open to what arises without limiting expression with our engrained protective habits. It is meditative, generous, and supported.
